Biographical Information

Amalio Carreño appeared in 3 major league games for the Philadelphia Phillies, all in relief, in July of 1991. He pitched a total of 3 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs on 5 hits 3 walks, while striking out 2 batters. It was his last professional season after having originally been signed as an international amateur free agent by the New York Yankees in November of 1983.

He pitched in the Yankees' minor league system from 1984 to 1988, when he was traded to Philadelphia in return for utility infielder Luis Aguayo on July 15th. He first reached AAA in 1987, pitching for the Columbus Clippers of the International League, but after the trade, he went back to AA with the Reading Phillies of the Eastern League and stayed there until the end of the 1990 season. He went 4-13, 3.66 in 25 games as a starter for Reading in 1990, but was still promoted to the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in 1991. His promotion came in spite of unimpressive numbers for the Red Barons: in 33 games, including 8 starts, he was 4-8, 5.33, with 52 strikeouts in 81 innings. He became a free agent after the 1991 season and signed with the Baltimore Orioles but was released before the start of the next season after failing to impress in spring training.

He was on the Venezuelan national team in the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games and 1983 Pan American Games, prior to signing with the Yankees. He later served as bullpen coach for the Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan League.
