Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Alper Bozkurt played in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.

He hit .217/.257/.239 for the 1996 Mainz Athletics, fielding .971, then was at .219/.375/.250 and .937 in '97, when he was 7-for-7 in steals. He hit .271/.360/.297 in 1998 and stole 13 bases in 16 tries, scoring 29 runs in 38 games while fielding .948. He was 5th in the Bundesliga-1 South with 69 assists. In 1999, he had his career year in terms of unadjusted stats at .380/.522/.523 with 25 runs in 26 games, fielding .940. He was 6th with 45 assists. He was 0 for 8 with a steal and a RBI in the 1999 European Championship, handling 3 chances error-free.

Bozkurt hit .345/.474/.379 in reduced time in 2000, fielding .905. In '01, with Germany switching from aluminum to wood bats, he hit .267/.415/.280 but fielded .871. He tied for 4th in HBP (8), tied for 6th in steals (11; caught twice), tied Tarek Shaer for 8th in assists (49) and was 6th with 12 errors. During 2002, he batted .276/.427/.333 with 27 runs in 28 games, stealing 16 bases in 17 tries. He fielded .954 at second base. He tied for 7th in runs, was 3rd in steals, tied Edward Martinez for 4th in assists (63) and was second to Martinez in steal rate.

In '03, he hit .224/.449/.289 and fielded .915. He was second in walks (30, 4 behind Nick Weisheipl), tied for 8th with 11 steals and 7th with 48 assists. The next summer, he batted .273/.379/.303 and fielded .977. He was among the leaders in runs (22, tied for 9th with Alexander Lauterbach), walks (16, tied for 7th) and assists (71, 4th). He fell to .173/.293/.235 in 2005, his last year in Germany's top loop, fielding .916. He was 8th in walks (14). For his career, he had batted .260/.399/.299 and fielded .936. He was 81-for-94 in steal attempts, had never hit a triple or homer and scored 210 runs in 265 games.

The Darmstadt native remained active in baseball, both in Germany and Turkey (his parents are both Turkish), serving as president of the Türkiye Beyzbol Federasyonu. He also has been a coach instructor for the Confederation of European Baseball and MLB International. He coached for Germany in the 2022 U18 European Championship.
