Biographical Information[edit]

Even in the early days of baseball left-handed pitching was seen as a valuable resource, as the career of Alfred Watkins can attest. In a minor league career that stretched from 1890 to 1895, Watkins got numerous trials from teams in the northeast, but each trial was short, as he found little success as a pitcher.

A Brooklyn native, Watkins claimed that he pitched in Birmingham, AL in 1889 prior to joining the Utica Pent-Ups in 1890 for his first verified minor league stint. Watkins was with the club in May and June, going 2-4 as a pitcher in league games before he was released.

Watkins got additional looks with Fall River, MA in 1893[1][2] and Shenandoah, PA in 1894, each time only lasting a single game. He also pitched a few games for Manhattan College in 1894, while also acting as the team's coach[3]. He got one more chance with Lewiston, ME in 1895[4], but again only lasted a few games.

He afterwards lived in Brooklyn, working as a utilities inspector[5], and was involved in the amateur baseball scene in the city.
