Biographical Information[edit]
Albert Smith is sometimes known as AE Smith or Edgar Smith to differentiate him from another major leaguer of the same era called Edgar (EE) Smith. To make things even more confusing, it appears that both of them were at Yale University in the early 1880s, and that this Smith's middle name was not even Edgar, but Edward (according to documents uncovered by SABR researchers in 2011).
Albert Smith was born in North Haven, CT, and attended Yale University in 1882. The following year he played 30 games for the Boston Beaneaters in 1883. He also umpired one National League game that season.
He apparently lived in New York City in 1900 and in Syracuse, NY in 1930.
