Biographical Information[edit]
Charles Dwight played twelve games for the Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association during the league's only season, 1884. His .233 batting average doesn't seem like much until you realize the team's batting average was .199. He primarily played catcher, a position where the regular for the season was Kid Baldwin, who hit .194. Of the ten players who appeared at catcher that year for the team, Dwight had the highest fielding percentage. Five of the ten were teenagers.
He also played briefly for the St. Paul Apostles that year.
He was long identified as Albert Ward Dwight from New York, NY, but that was a mistake. Contemporary records indicate that he was an amateur player from Chicago, IL named Charles and not Albert. He was a graduate of Northwestern University who eventually became a lawyer in his home town.
