Akihiro Yanase pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.
Yanase was drafted by the Softbank Hawks in the 6th round of the 2005 NPB draft, and he had a 0.68 ERA in 10 appearances in 2006. He relieved Tsuyoshi Wada in the 2006 PLCS first stage Game 2, and he got the win with 2 1/3 shutout innings. Yanase was the first pitcher in NPB history to get his first win in the postseason. He collected 9 holds with a 3.33 ERA in 44 games in 2007, but he then slumped to a 5.16 ERA in 30 games in 2008.
He missed most of the next three seasons due to right elbow injury, then he collected 15 holds with a 1.63 ERA in 35 games in 2012. Yanase extended his solid performance in 2013 as his ERA was 1.52 in 44 games with 11 holds, then he pitched 40 games with a 2.67 ERA in 8 games in 2014. However, he only pitched 10 games combined in the next two seasons due to elbow injury, and the Hawks released him. The Hanshin Tigers signed him, and he allowed 8 runs in 1 2/3 innings in 2017 then he retired.
Overall, Yanase was 11-6 with a 3.32 ERA, collected 52 holds and 8 saves in 218 appearances, struck out 195 and pitched 214 1/3 innings in 10 seasons in NPB.
