Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Abimelec Ortiz was signed by the Texas Rangers as an undrafted free agent on July 29, 2021 coming out of Florida SouthWestern College. A product of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy, he claims that he barely spoke any English before starting college, but learned quickly once he moved to the U.S. from his native Puerto Rico.

He played in the Rangers system from 2021 to 2021, starting with the DSL Rangers 1 in 2021, then moving to the Down East Wood Ducks of the Carolina League in 2022. His breakthrough season came in 2023, when he combined to hit .294/.371/.619 in 109 games between Down east and the Hickory Crawdads of the High-A South Atlantic League. He hit 33 homers and drove in 101 runs in 109 games between the two teams, earning the title of Player of the Year in the SALLY League in addition to being a league post-season All-Star. He moved up to the AA Texas League in 2024, where he hit .243 with 18 homers and 64 RBIs in 115 games for the Frisco RoughRiders. He then split the 2025 season between Frisco and the AAA Round Rock Express, batting .257 with 25 homers and 89 RBIs in 130 games.

He started playing winter ball in the Puerto Rican League in 2021-22, with the Gigantes de Carolina and suited up regularly for that team in subsequent years. On January 22, 2026, he was one of five prospects traded by the Rangers to the Washington Nationals in return for P MacKenzie Gore. He began that season in AAA with the Rochester Red Wings where he hit .235 in his first 75 games, with 16 homers and 59 RBIs. He was called up to Washington on the last day before the All-Star break, July 12th, and made his debut as the starting DH against the New York Yankees. He went 1 for 2, hitting a double off Will Warren for his first big league hit, before being replaced by pinch-hitter Curtis Mead in the 6th; it was a good managerial decision, as Mead promptly homered off LOOGY Tim Hill, but Washington still lost the game, 5-3.

His unusual first name comes from the Book of Judges from the Bible and literally means "My Father is a King" though it could be rendered "Father of the King".
