Are you hooked on Immaculate Grid, the daily trivia game from Baseball Reference? We sure are! We’ll warn you right now—this blog post contains spoilers. But if you’re looking for a little help with today’s grid (or you already filled it out and want to know who else qualified) read on.

To fill out today’s top-left cell, you need to choose a player who played for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. There were 276 players who played for both the Pirates and Braves. Here are some examples:

Paul Waner

Hall of Famer Paul Waner spent 15 seasons on the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning three batting titles and an MVP award. In 1941, towards the end of his career, he signed with the Boston Braves, where he played 209 games.

Frank Thomas

Not The Big Hurt! This Frank Thomas made three All-Star Games as a member of the Pirates in the 1950s. He left Pittsburgh in 1959, in the trade that made Harvey Haddix a member of the Pirates. A few years later, Thomas was traded to the Milwaukee Braves, where he posted an .821 OPS, his best OPS with any team he played for in his career.

Adam LaRoche

Slugging first baseman Adam LaRoche began his career on the Atlanta Braves, making his major league debut in 2004. In 2007, the Braves traded him to the Pirates, where he spent three years before ultimately finding his way back to Atlanta for the end of the 2009 season. LaRoche won both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger in his career.

Rabbit Maranville

Rabbit Maranville was a Hall of Fame middle infielder who started his career in the Deadball Era. In fact, in 23 seasons in the majors, Maranville hit just 28 home runs. However, he was one of the best fielders of his era, leading NL in dWAR three times.

Mark Melancon

One of the most recent players to play for both franchises, Mark Melancon saved 130 games for the Pirates from 2013-16, with Pittsburgh making the playoffs every year except 2016. Eventually, Melancon found his way to Atlanta for two seasons, pitching for the Braves in the 2020 NLCS. He also runs a successful turf company.
