As the Sports Reference sites have grown, so has the level of interest of our users. And so has the time committed to responding and working with users. I'm not complaining as that is an important part of our job. I've always felt that the best ideas come from users telling us how they want to use the site and where we aren't meeting their expectations.
But....this aspect of the job has soaked up more and more of our time, so much so that when I come to work on Monday, most of the day is spent just cleaning out my e-mail inbox. So we've done what any growing company would do. We hired a really smart, knowledgeable person to take over this job.
Neil Paine started this week as our user affairs coordinator. He is going to handle most user e-mail, work on user education and training initiatives, and work on lots and lots of special projects. Neil is a recent graduate of the Georgia Tech's Science, Technology and Culture (STAC) Program, and he'll be based near Atlanta. He possesses a broad knowledge of all of our sports and is perhaps best known as our stellar basketball blogger. Besides being a good writer, he has a lot of math savvy, so we are really excited to have him onboard.
As a user, not much should change for you other than your e-mails will get answered sooner and bugs will be fixed faster.

I've listed only the 23 most recent pitchers to hit 1 homer. View the full list since 1954 here.
Notes about these occurrences:
- The overwhelming majority of these cases happen when the starting pitcher left early due to either injury or ineffectiveness and the reliever in question engaged in a long relief effort. This is the most common circumstance where a relief pitcher gets a plate appearances, especially these days when relief pitchers practically never come to the plate.
- One obvious exception is Brooks Kieschnick who appears here a few times, as the Brewers were using him as both a pitcher and an outfielder (and occasionally as a DH too.) The bottom line is that when he appeared as a reliever and came up to bat, he was almost always allowed to hit---no sense in pinch-hitting for him as he was as good a hitter as most guys they had on the bench.
- Guillermo Mota appears twice.
- Mark Worrell's homer was pretty interesting. He came in long relief of an ineffective starter and hit a 3-run homer with the Cardinals down by 5 runs, bringing the score to 8-6. The Cardinals scored 3 more times later (after Worrell had left the game) to take the lead 9-8, but Elijah Dukes hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the game.

Man there are some low OBP numbers in there. Thanks goodness for the few homers they've hit, otherwise Blaylock (.275 OBP!!!) and Bruce and Barmes wouldn't even crack 80 in their OPS+ numbers.
We've got 11 players at the moment qualified for the batting title with OBP values at or below .300:

(This is another stat that I saw on ESPN.com's mobile web site. They run some very interesting quick stats there--I can't link to it directly, but just check out ESPN.com on your mobile device if you want to see it.)
The records are coming fast and furious for Mark Buehrle. He recently became just the second pitcher since 1954 to induce 6 ground-ball double plays in a single game.
Here is the full list for everybody with at least 5 in a game.

Not that the plan really helped these teams...as they all lost their games anyway.
Now, if you really want to have some fun with your friends, ask them what Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, Roger Maris, Andre Dawson and Garry Templeton have in common:

Mark Armour, founder of the SABR BioProject, allowed me to repost this message he sent to the sabr bioproject e-mail list. I wanted to repost it because it is well written and gives you a way to help RetroSheet and help Baseball-Reference.com. Since much of the data that appears on this site comes from the heroic volunteers at RetroSheet. Anything that helps them out will eventually find its way onto this site and into our databases. Besides you know you would love to enter 1942 Detroit Tigers game logs. Anyway, here is Mark's note.

Shane Victorino Batting Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com
People want to share what they find and we want them to as well. We have added an option to the list of options above all of the stats tables (not sitewide until we re-run the entire site) after CSV (comma-separated values) and PRE (pre-formatted text) called LINK. Clicking this updates the URL address bar (where you type www.baseball-reference.com) and brings up a popup that gives a url (the http: thingie) that will automatically guide another user to that particular table with the same sorting that you are presently looking at. So for example if you want to show a user that Victorino had a ton of infield hits last year. Sort on infield hits, click the LINK option and send them the link that shows up.
This happens with a bit of javascript, so you'll need that enabled (it probably already is) for it to work.
A couple of gotchas that we are still working out:
IE is a little funky in the url it presents in the popup, but if you use right click save shortcut it works.
The styling of the popup needs work and it should be shifted left if possible.
The use of the hash value puts you below the table header in Firefox, so the table header is not visible when sent via a direct link. This is not an issue in IE.
