How many guys do you think have played at least 35 games at all 3 outfield positions in a single season?
Surprisingly, it's been done 35 times since 1901.
Here are the 24 such seasons with an OPS+ of at least 100:

Special kudos to Eli Marrero in particular, who also caught 44 games that year!
Incidentally, lowering the requirement to 30 games at each outfield position increases the list to 77 such seasons. Dropping it further to 25 games at each position produces 148 such seasons. Here are the 29 of those seasons occurring since 2000:

It took a little over a month, but AJ Burnett has racked up another game with 3 wild pitches. As I mentioned at the time Burnett was already the (post 1954) record holder for most 3+ WP games in a season. Now he has 4 such games. Yet , remarkably his 17 wild pitched are nowhere near the league record, even among recent starters. Here are the single season leaders since 1901:

After his unusual "pinch running" assignment for the Red Sox last night, Mike Lowell stayed in the game and hit 2 home runs. He became the 3rd player since 1954 to enter a game as a PR and hit 2 or more homers.

Mark Bellhorn had only two very good years in his career: 2004 and the above 2002 season with the Cubs. It's pretty incredible that he posted a 133 OPS+ over 146 games while playing 77 games at 2B, 36 games at 3B, 22 games at 1B, 12 games at SS, and one game in the outfield.
Since turning 30, Rich Aurelia hasn't been nearly the offensive player he was earlier in his career, but he has extended that career by displaying great defensive utility. He's played multiple infield positions every year since 2004.

It clearly used to be a lot more common in the early part of the 20th century. I don't know if this is because players got hit more back then or pitchers specifically were thrown at more. Somebody (gerry?) must know.
Here is the list since 1970. I notice that the majority of the names are better pitchers. I'm not sure if this is because they're getting hit due to pitching well or if they just get enough HBP to make the list because they are pitching more innings.
Here are career leaders among pitchers since 1901:

Again, mostly guys from pretty far back. Johnson, Carlton, and Niekro seem to be helped by coming to plate a lot more total times. Then you see a guy like Altrock who got plunked 10 times in just 573 career plate appearances. That's got to be down either to his batting style or deliberate plunking.

For the most part, these are guys who pitched a lot of innings. Elarton and Lohse stick out as guys who haven't pitched much by comparison and have many fewer plate appearances, but with such low overall HBP totals it's tough to know why it happened--could just be random chance.

I was unaware that in 2006 Miguel Olivo became the first player to strike out at least 100 times in a season with no more than 10 walks. In fact he struck out 103 times against just 9 bases on balls.

I stopped at #23 because Wood is the first pitcher on the list.
No pitcher approaches as many as 65 strikeouts anymore because they don't get enough plate appearances to amass such totals. Wood had 144 PAs, but check out the highest strikeout totals by pitchers in recent years:

Of course, Wood's season is the highest single-season total for K's for a pitcher. Here are the leaders:

Nobody from recent seasons due, again, to the lack of plate appearances. (Fewer starts and shorter starts limits the total amount of plate appearances and therefore the total number of strikeouts.)

Last week I posted a list of all the bunt doubles in the majors since 1988. Included in that list was a peculiar bunt-double by John Vander Wal which was described as : "Double to LF/Bunt (Bunt Line Drive to Deep LF)"
I thought that it was strange that anyone could hit a bunt line drive to deep left field. Carl Bialik of the Wall Street Journal confirmed my suspicions by sending me a link to the New York Times article about that game. In the article Tyler Kepner refers to Vander Wal having "sliced a double to the left-field warning track." Clearly Vander Wal did not bunt.
I fired off an email to Dave Smith at Retrosheet and he has confirmed that Vander Wal's hit should not be listed as a bunt. The change will take effect in the Retrosheet database in December. I have edited my original blog post to reflect this information.

Last week Andy wrote about Marco Scutaro's large number of walk-off plate appearances.:
"Can you believe that Scutaro has already been responsible for NINE walk-off wins? That’s more than most players get in their entire careers, much less below-average middle infielders."
Andy is an expert when it comes to walk-offs. He has written about them extensively and has a good feel for when something unusual happens. I however, am a novice and felt compelled to run the numbers.
Scutaro began playing full time in 2004. That same season he collected had first walk-off win. As Andy mentioned Scutaro has amassed 9 walk-off wins playing either 2nd base or shortstop. Here are the leaders since 2004 in walk-off wins among middle infielders (through Friday's games).
