Hottest Entertainment Ticket in Town. A Hidden Gem! -- 2005-12-27
Our family have gone to many of the NUTS games and I've gotta tell ya, it's a great night out. The Colorado franchise in Modesto not only are very competitive, but I believe won the first half of the 2005 California League season Went to several games in the summer, and right behind homeplate and up a dozen rows may be the best seating in the house. It's good, minor league baseball, lots of pride from the community and the family atmosphere and between inning activities keeps everyone entertained and into the game. The staff is particularly friendly, and it all had a good feel. Our summer day games in Modesto can be difficult in the sun with high 90+ degree weather. Concessions are reasonable too. This may be the best entertainment value in the entire Central Valley!
Night games draw better due to the heat. The Fireworks that are planned on some of the Friday & Saturday summer night games are work the price of admission al by themselves. A real treat for younger children too. For the Nut's first year in the Valley, it's obvious that the park, the team, and the community are all working together to make this work. More people are going to discover this entertainment treat in 2006 and beyond. Parking is simple and easy and the whole evening for 4 can be had for under $30. Movies are more expensive these days. Go Nuts!

The name Nuts is new do to the fact they are no longer associated with the Oakland A's. They are now a Colorado Rockies affiliate (the A's are now in stockton). The name was voted on by the community out of several submissions. The area grows a large quantity of nuts, hence the name.

What was so wrong about Modesto Athletics? The uniforms matched their affiliate MLB team - it was like going to a mini Oakland game - now it's like going to a little league game. "We're the Nuts! Look at our obscenely ugly uniform and logo!"

Delightful -- 2002-04-29
I had seen aerial photos of John Thurman Field on the Dant Clayton Corporation web site prior to my April 2002 visit. Dant Clayton is the manufactuer of the stadium and it appears to be somewhat of a "kit" you can order from them and then construct on your site. If you visit their web site you will notice Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Georgia is a roofed version of the same stadium. McKechnie Field in Brandenton, Florida appears to be a larger version of the same "kit."
I found it to be a delightful "low-budget" (not a bunch of luxury suites) answer to the need for a new and up to date minor league stadium. Very, very nice! The staff was great and I was lucky enough to catch a Modesto A's t-shirt shot into the stands. I would return here to watch games anytime......if I didn't live 400 miles away in southern Oregon.
Bakersfield and Visalia should strongly consider this Dant Clayton stadium "kit." Congratulations City of Modesto!

Day Games in Modesto -- 2001-07-28
I went to one game in June at this enjoyable little park. It's good, minor league baseball, lots of civic pride and family atmosphere. The staff was particularly friendly, and it all had a good feel. But day games in Modesto are unbearable. It is hot, directly down-on-top hot, hot, and hotter.
I talked to several people who mentioned that the night games draw much better (for obvious reasons, I now realize) and that the park, the team, and the community are all working together. "A" to the A's for effort.

John Thurman Field is right on a golf course just off I-99. It’s a pretty setting, at least from outside the main gate. The right field area borders on some tennis courts and has a high school sort of feel to it but the inside of the park is generally nice to look at. There aren’t enough seats in this park, and I’m not talking about availability (they don’t draw that well) but the fact that the entire area outside of first and third base is bleachers. Not comfortable and not charming. The seats they do have directly behind the plate are kind of small and cramped. Still it’s a decent place to watch a game because the field and surroundings (except the right field corner) are good. The biggest drawback here is the PA. The announcer is on constantly through the game and it gets quite annoying. Also avoid day or late afternoon games; there's no shade and it gets really hot.
