Biographical Information[edit]
Spike Brady played one game as an outfielder for the Chicago White Stockings in 1875, when they were still part of the National Association. He is identified by Peter Morris' website [1] as one of the "Cold Cases of the Diamond" because little is known about what happened to him. It is known that he had eight children and became a prominent grocer. However, he disappeared around 1910.
A man whose last name was only recorded as Brady umpired three National League games in 1877; all three games were played in Cincinnati, OH in May of that year. Contemporary newspapers identify this man as Spike Brady and were not particularly impressed by his work: "Brady, thou art a most gorgeous fraud; and in calling you this, we put it very, very mildly", stated the Louisville Courier-Journal on May 16, 1877, after the Louisville team walked off the field after seven innings in a game for which he was the umpire the previous day (the game was recorded as a forfeit win for Cincinnati.
