Biographical Information[edit]

Tsuneo Horii pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Horii was drafted by the Taiyo Whales in the 2nd round of the 1980 NPB draft, and he spent his first four seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues due to a right elbow injury; he only got 25 appearances combined with the big club. Horii was 5-8 with a 4.98 ERA in 1985, and he pitched 47 games with a 3.93 ERA and a 7-4 record in 1986. He was 7th in appearances in the Central League, 14 behind Kiyooki Nakanishi. His ERA rose to 4.94 in 23 games in 1987, and the Whales traded him with Akiharu Koyama to the Lotte Orions for Masaru Ishikawa. He struggled in 1988 as he had a 5.63 ERA in 12 appearances, and he recorded a 3.67 ERA in 18 games in 1989. He only pitched three games in 1990, and he announced his retirement. Horii was Lotte's minor league pitching coach from 1991 to 1993, and he coached their top team in 1994. He then became the pitching coach for the China Times Eagles from 1995 to 1996, and he coached the minors team of the Yokohama BayStars from 1998 to 2004. Horii was also the pitching coach for the Japan Samurai Bears in 2005, and he scouted for the BayStars.

Overall, Horii was 15-17 with a 4.47 ERA, struck out 160 and pitched 310 innings in 9 seasons in NPB.
