Biographical Information[edit]

Toru Okamoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Okamoto was drafted by the Taiyo Whales in the 2nd round of the 1987 NPB draft, and he had a 4.41 ERA in 31 appearances in 1988. His ERA was 3.04 in 37 games in 1989, and he pitched 52 games with a 3.70 ERA in 1990. Okamoto was 2nd in appearances in the Central League, 3 behind Yasuo Kubo. He went 11-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 1991, and he tied Manabu Kitabeppu and Masaki Saito for 10th in wins. Okamoto then had a 8-9 record with a 4.23 ERA in 1992, but he only went 1-5 with a 4.67 ERA in 10 games in 1993 before a left shoulder injury ended his season. He was 2-4 with a 4.75 EAR in 1994, and his ERA was 3.00 in 6 relief outings in 1995. He was then traded to the Nippon-Ham Fighters for Hiroaki Matsuura, but he failed to return to the top team and he announced his retirement. He was the minor league pitching coach for the Yokohama BayStars from 2004 to 2006.

Overall, Okamoto was 30-33 with a 3.67 ERA, struck out 388 and pitched 603 1/3 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
