Terry Gellinger

From BR Bullpen

Biographical Information[edit]

Terry Gellinger was 9-0 for the Illinois Illini in 1959; only Marv Rotblatt (10-0) had posted a better record in school history. [1] He was with Team USA when they won Bronze in the 1959 Pan American Games. The Chicago Tribune carried box scores of three of their seven games and he started two of them. He went the distance (6 H, 2 BB, 6 K) in a 2-1 win over Mexico's Soto but it is unclear if it is Claudio Soto or Jose Soto who he beat. In a rematch with Mexico six days later, he went 7 2/3 IP and gave up 7 hits, 4 walks and 5 runs (all earned) while striking out nine in a no-decision; William Mansfield got the win in relief in a 7-6 victory. [2] He was later the coach of William Fremd High School and Palatine High School. [3] He is in the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame; his son Mike Gellinger later was a MLB coach. [4]
