Submariner Takahiro Watanabe played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.
Watanabe went 26-3 with a 0.86 ERA and 213 strikeouts in his college career, and he won three MVPs and two best pitcher awards in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area University Baseball League. He was drafted by the Yakult Swallows in the 5th round of the 1971 NPB draft, and he went 7-14 with a 4.85 ERA in 1972. He tied Keishi Asano for 5th in losses in the Central League. Watanabe improved to 8-8 with a 2.38 ERA in 1973, then he struggled in 1974 as he went 1-8 with a 5.09 ERA. He then recorded a 3.23 ERA in 34 games with a 6-6 record in 1975, and he had a 2-2 record with a 4.97 ERA in 1976. Watanabe allowed 5 runs in 4 1/3 innings in 1977, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Watanabe was 24-38 with a 3.96 ERA, struck out 265 and pitched 534 innings in 6 seasons in NPB.
