Yamamoto was drafted by the Nankai Hawks in the 2nd round of the 1966 NPB draft, and he went 6-for-28 in 1967. He was 6-for-25 in 1968, and he had a 7-for-27 record in 1969. Yamamoto shared the starting second baseman spot with Takeshi Koba in 1970, and he played a career-high 87 games with a .293/.333/.471 batting line. However, his spot was taken by Teruhide Sakurai in 1971, and he slumped to .196/.245/.196. He was 4-for-27 in 1972, and he announced his retirement. Yamamoto later coached the Hawks from 1976 to 1977, and he was their minor league fielding coach from 1973 to 1975. He jumped to the Hankyu Braves in 1978 and coached their minors team until 1979, and he was their top team fielding coach from 1980 to 1982. Yamamoto managed the Samsung Lions of the KBO in 1983, but they finished 4th and he was fired. He later became an assistant coach for Ryukoku University in 2015.

Overall, Yamamoto hit .252/.292/.380 with 85 hits and 10 homers in 6 seasons in NPB.
