Biographical Information[edit]
Susumu Ishikawa played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 15 years.
Ishikawa signed with the Takahashi Unions in 1954, and he only played 2 games in his first season. He hit .302/.352/.422 in 1955, and he collected 27 steals with a .277/.308/.360 batting line in 1956. However, Ishikawa suffered from shoulder injury in 1957, so he only played 8 games and he left the team .After staying in the industrial league for a season, Ishikawa signed with the Daimai Orions and he hit .246/.268/.343 in 80 games in 1959. He had a .224/.288/.269 batting line in 1960, and he went 3-for-7 in the 1960 Nippon Series. The Orions were swept by the Taiyo Whales.
The Fuji native recorded a .264/.326/.364 batting line in 1961, and he improved to .320/.359/.402 in 79 games in 1962. He then batted .266/.274/.340 in 1963, and he was sent to the Hankyu Braves. Ishikawa played 108 games with a .246/.291/.338 batting line in 1964, then he had a .249/.282/.326 batting line in 1965. He collected 13 doubles with a .253/.297/.368 batting line in 1966, but he lost his spot after Tokuji Nagaike shined in 1967. Ishikawa was 20-for-84 that season, and he went 1-for-3 in the 1967 Nippon Series. The Braves lost to the Yomiuri Giants in 6 games. Ishikawa was 22-for-69 in 1968, and he got a pinch-hit infield single against Kunio Jonouchi in the 1968 Nippon Series Game 5. The Giants beat the Braves again in 6 games. Ishikawa went 4-for-22 in 1969, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Ishikawa hit .263/.302/.353 with 509 hits and 15 homers in 15 seasons in NPB.
