Biographical Information

Sumio Watarai signed with the Nankai Hawks in 1957, and he never got more than 40 at-bats a season in his entire career. He was often used as a reconnaissance player in his entire career. Watarai was also the minor league battery coach for the Hawks from 1968 to 1971 and in 1986.

Overall, Watarai hit .157/.190/.215 with 27 hits in 14 seasons in NPB. He only had 191 plate appearances in his 419 games.
