Biographical Information[edit]

Sho Miyagawa pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 3 years.

Miyagawa was taken by the Rakuten Golden Eagles in the first round of the development phase in the 2012 NPB draft. He was the first development player to win a game for Rakuten and the second development player to win his first NPB start, following Yuji Nishino. He finished the 2013 season 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 17 games (2 starts), though he walked 21 in 40 1/3 IP. He made one appearance in Rakuten's triumphant run in the 2013 Japan Series, struggling in game four. Relieving Jim Heuser with a 4-1 lead in the 4th, he walked Tetsuya Matsumoto and Yoshiyuki Kamei and allowed a run-scoring single to Hisayoshi Chono. He hit Takayuki Terauchi in the helmet and was ejected; reliever Shinichiro Koyama allowed one inherited run to score and Rakuten went on for a 6-5 loss. Miyagawa then started in the semifinals of the 2013 Asia Series but again struggled, giving up three first-inning runs thanks to hits by Fu-Hao Liu, Wu-Hsiung Pan and Yung-Chi Chen as well as an error by his first baseman; he lost to the Uni-President Lions, the first time a NPB team had not made it to an Asia Series final.

The Osaka native had a 4.29 ERA in 17 relief outings in 2014, but he then underwent right elbow injury and missed the entire 2015 season. Miyagawa's ERA was 0.93 in 9 appearances in 2016, but he didn't pitch another game for the big club before the Golden Eagles released him in 2018. He later pitched for the Saitama Musashi Heat Bears of the Baseball Challenge League, and he announced his retirement in 2020. He became a batting practice pitcher for Rakuten in 2022.

Overall, Miyakawa was 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA, struck out 74 and pitched 92 innings in 3 seasons in NPB.
