Shintaro Masuda played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.
Masuda hit over .400 with 28 homers while in high school. The Rakuten Golden Eagles took him in the 4th round of the 2005 NPB draft. He debuted in NPB in 2007 and singled off Ryan Glynn in his first at-bat; for the season, he was 5 for 11 with a double, run and 2 RBI. He was in ni-gun for most of 2008 (0 for 4 in NPB) and 2009 (0 for 3, BB in NPB). He played 17 games as a utility infielder for Rakuten in 2010, hitting .208/.296/.271. He made the Japanese national team roster for the 2010 Intercontinental Cup.
The Kyoto native went 3-for-26 in 2011, and he finally got some chances in 2012. Masuda played 79 games with a .295/.350/.433 batting line that season, then he crushed a career-high 8 homers with a .272/.352/.425 batting line in 2013. He slumped to .219/.336/.333 in 2014, and he only played 28 games with a .232/.330/.354 batting line in 2015. Masuda then hit .278/.409/.352 in 2016, and his batting line fell to .169/.234/.268 in 2017. He struggled again as he recorded a .177/.257/.387 batting line in 2018, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Masuda hit .246/.329/.373 with 269 hits and 25 homers in 12 seasons in NPB.
