Biographical Information[edit]
Shinji Watanabe was drafted by the Hankyu Braves in the 3rd round of the 1985 NPB draft, and he only played one game for the top team in his first three seasons. He was 8-for-30 in 1989, but he only got 23 at-bats in the next two years. Watanabe hit .366/.386/.439 in 44 plate appearances over 33 games in 1992 (he was mostly used at DH with Kelvin Torve and Carmelo Martinez at 1B), and he went 8-for-22 in 1993. The Braves then traded him to the Hiroshima Carp, but Watanabe went 3-for-19 in 1994 and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Watanabe hit .294/.322/.449 with 40 hits in 7 seasons in NPB.
