Biographical Information[edit]
Shinji Kurataka signed with the Daimai Orions in 1960, and he had a 7.20 ERA in 3 games in 1962. He was then turned into an infielder, and he hit .229/.250/.314 in 36 plate appearances in 1963, backing up the great Kihachi Enomoto. Kurataka improved to .311/.344/.361 in 65 plate appearances for the team (now the Tokyo Orions) in 1964 (almost exclusively as a pinch-hitter), but he then struggled in 1965 as he had a 2-for-16 record. He only got one hit in 12 at-bats in 1966, and he announced his retirement.
