Biographical Information[edit]

Shinichi Sakaki played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Sakaki was drafted by the Tokyo Orions in the 4th round of the 1967 NPB draft, and he spent his first four seasons primarily in the minors; he only got 35 at-bats combined for the top team. He replaced Takeo Daigo to become Lotte's starting catcher in 1972, and he had a solid .300/.326/.415 batting line with 3 homers. Sakaki played 80 games with a .272/.331/.354 batting line in 1973, and his batting line fell to .229/.259/.286 in 1974. He struggled again as he recorded a .169/.210/.220 in 1975, and he bounced back with a .278/.320/.322 batting line in 1976, then he slumped to .188/.246/.203 in 1977. Sakaki hit .193/.264/.229 in 45 games in 1978, and he announced his retirement after he recorded a .259/.344/.296 batting line in 1979.

Overall, Sakurai hit .237/.287/.297 with 182 hits and 9 homers in 11 seasons in NPB.
