Shigeru Sugimura played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years
Sugimura was drafted by the Yakult Swallows in the first round of the 1975 NPB draft, and he went 3-for-18 in 1977. He only played 2 games in 1978, then he had a .243/.286/.281 batting line in 185 at-bats in 1979. Sugimura hit .245/.298/.358 in 1980, and he had a .235/.267/.296 batting line in 1981. He played a career-high 87 games with a .229/.263/.303 batting line in 1982, though he still wasn't a starter; Shintaro Mizutani was their main shortstop and Kazuhide Funada the primary third baseman. He slumped to .189/.200/.283 in 1983. Sugimura batted .272/.337/.346 in 60 games in 1984, and he had a .216/.310/.216 batting line in 1985. He only got 21 more at-bats for the big club before he announced his retirement in 1987. He later became the batting coach for the Swallows from 2000 to 2007 and for the Yokohama BayStars from 2008 to 2011. The Swallows named him their new batting coach in 2013.
Overall, Sugimura hit .228/.271/.287 with 147 hits and 4 homers in 11 seasons in NPB.
