Matsumoto's ERA was 3.41 in 16 relief outings in 1994, and he only pitched 7 games in 1995. He then recorded a 3.20 ERA in 49 appearances in 1996, and he tied Masataka Endo and Shinji Sasaoka for 3rd in games in the Central League. However, Matsumoto suffered from an elbow injury, and he announced his retirement in 1999.
