Biographical Information[edit]

Petr Zýma debuted in the Extraliga in 2007 with Krč Altron, going 1 for 12 with three walks and two steals. In 2008, the teenager hit .330/.409/.423. He was involved in the MLB European Academy that year. He batted .258/.369/.348 and fielded .890 for the 2009 Eagles Praha, with 13 steals in 16 tries. He struggled in the 2010 Extraliga (.227/.314/.250, .864 FLD) though he did go 7-for-7 in steal attempts. He spent part of the year attending college in the US, a situation that limited his Extraliga playing time for several years.

He made his debut for the Czech national team in the 2010 Intercontinental Cup. He was the team's main second baseman and also saw action at SS and 3B. He hit .263/.375/.468 with a team-high 5 RBI in six games, fielding .917. His four runs tied for second on the team, one behind Michal Ondráček. He was a late scratch from the Czech entry in the 2010 European Championship. He saw limited action with the Eagles Praha in 2011 (0 for 4, 3 PO, 2 A).

In 2012, he hit .435/.585/.630 with 14 runs in 15 games for the Eagles, fielding .961. Had he qualified, he would have been third in average (behind Wayne Ough and Jakub Malik). As the Extraliga used different cut-offs for OBP qualifiers, he wound up the leader in that category, .053 ahead of Jakub Voják. He batted .297/.441/.324 with 21 runs in 21 games in 2013, fielding .929.

Back in the Czech Republic full-time by 2014, he hit .333/.426/.518 with 40 runs in 35 games, fielding .915 while being joined on the middle infield by his brother, Michal Zýma. He was 6th in the league with 73 total bases (between Daniel Mráz and Corey Lyon), tied for 8th with four homers, was 7th with 47 hits and was 5th in runs. He also returned to the Czech national team that year, hitting .211/.464/.368 with 8 walks and 5 runs in 7 games in the 2014 European Championship, fielding .909. He had a 3-run, 3-RBI game against France. He tied Kalian Sams for third in the event in walks.

In 2015, Zýma hit .366/.454/.427 with 37 runs in 31 games, fielding .902, but was 2 for 17 with six whiffs and two errors in four postseason games. He was 9th in the regular season in hits (48) and 7th in runs. He hit .250/.471/.333 with 5 walks in 4 games in the 2015 Universiade. He was 2 for 12 with a run and a RBI in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but made a crucial two-run error in the semifinals against Nicaragua that let them tie it and helped stop a Czech upset.
