Biographical Information[edit]
Pavel Hernández has pitched in Cuba and Mexico and for the Cuban national team.
He debuted in 2016-2017, allowing five walks, three hits and five runs (two earned) in 2 2/3 IP for the Industriales. He gave up six runs in five innings in 2017-2018 and five runs (four earned) in 6 1/3 IP in 2018-2019. He was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in increased action in 2019-2020 and 6-6 with a 4.73 ERA in 2020-2021. He was 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA in the postseason. [1] He tied Yosimar Cousín for 3rd with 76 K.
In the 2021 Caribbean Baseball Cup, he allowed one run in one inning. [2] He had a 7-2, 3.58 record in 2021-2022 and had a 1.50 ERA and no decisions in the postseason. [3] He finished 8th in winning percentage. In the first Cuban Elite League, he was 3-5 with a 3.76 ERA for the Portuarios de Industriales & Mayabeque but had a 10.50 ERA (no decisions) in the postseason. [4] He lost to Riku Kikuchi and Japan in the 2022 Haarlem Baseball Week, walking four in 1 1/3 IP. [5] He was 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA in the 2022 Caribbean Baseball Cup, losing twice to Puerto Rico, including in the title game. He tied Robin Haven for the loss lead though his 7 K tied for 6th with Jose Rodriguez and Alexander Valiente. [6]
The right-hander was 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in five rough starts for the Industriales in 2022-2023 and 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA in the Cuban Elite League playoffs (he did not pitch in the regular season). [7] He was also 2-3 with a 5.31 ERA for Mexico's Rieleros de Aguascalientes. In 2023-2024, he was 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA (1-2, 3.95 in the postseason). On May 7, he no-hit Holguín. [8]
Hernández was with Cuba for the 2024 Premier 12. In his lone appearance, he relieved Yusniel Padrón-Artiles with a 6-0 deficit in the 6th against South Korea with one aboard and no outs. He got Sung-mun Song out and whiffed Seong-han Park. After a steal, Won-jun Choi singled in the inherited runner before Chang-ki Hong grounded out. In the 7th, he retired Min-jae Shin but allowed a Do-yeong Kim homer. After he walked Dong-hee Yoon, he gave way to Andy Vargas. [9]
