Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Omar Martínez was originally signed as an international amateur free agent by the New York Yankees on June 15, 2018. He played 1 game for the DSL Yankees that year, then another 40 games between that team and the GCL Yankees West in 2019, hitting .231 with 2 homers and 18 RBIs.
After being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, he resumed playing in 2021 and stayed in the Yankees system until the end of the 2025 season, reaching AAA for 25 games that final season. He showed some promising power over that time, with 18 homers and 71 RBIs for the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League in 2023, 13 homers for the Hudson Valley Renegades of the South Atlantic League in 2024, and 12 homers and 55 RBIs between three teams in 2025. He was a post-season All-Star in the Florida State League in 2023.
He became a free agent following the 2025 season and signed with the Los Angeles Angels on November 28th. He was assigned to the Salt Lake Bees of the AAA Pacific Coast League to open the 2026 season and hit .212 with 4 homers and 7 RBIs in his first 20 games. He was called up to Los Angeles on May 8th following injuries to both of the team's regular catchers, Logan O'Hoppe and Travis d'Arnaud. Veteran back-up Sebastian Rivero was the first one to be called up to lend a hand, and he followed suit on May 8t. He made his big league debut that day, catching the 8th inning of a 2-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays after Rivero had been pinch-hit for in the top of the inning. He recorded his first career hit the next day with a single off Toronto's Tommy Nance in the 9th inning. He was pinch-hitting for Rivero with the Angels trailing badly with two outs, and hit the first pitch he saw into right field.
