Biographical Information[edit]

Norio Furuya played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.

Furuya signed with the Kokutetsu Swallows in 1950, and he was originally assigned as the starter of their first game. However, Furuya was too nervous so he hid in his dorm. Keiji Narita replaced him, and the Swallows lost. He ended up 9-19 with a 4.00 ERA in his first season, and he was 4th in losses in the Central League (tied with Kozo Naito and Kiichiro Nomoto). He was moved to bullpen in 1951, and he was 3-7 with a 3.82 ERA. Furuya then went 3-5 with a 3.00 ERA in 1953, and his ERA was 2.52 in 14 games in 1954. He recorded a 2.37 ERA in 18 games in 1955, but he only pitched 6 games in 1955 then he announced his retirement. Furuya later coached the Hawks from 1970 to 1971, and he became a scout, signing Yukihiro Murakami.

Overall, Furuya was 18-31 with a 3.63 ERA, struck out 157 and pitched 570 innings in 6 seasons in NPB.
