Biographical Information[edit]
Mototsugu Kawanaka played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.
Kawanaka was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 2nd round of the 1997 NPB draft, and he only played 3 games in his first season. He was 6-for-22 in 1999, and he went 0-for-6 in 2000. Kawanaka had a 10-for-39 record in 2001, and he hit .277/.302/.357 in 74 games in 2002. He played 71 games with a .248/.285/.336 batting line as Yomiuri's main utility man in 2003, then he recorded a .235/.298/.271 batting line in 2004. Kawanaka batted .280/.337/.473 in 2005, but he slumped to .174/.232/.272 in 2006 and he announced his retirement. He later became the minor league fielding coach for the Giants from 2008 to 2009.
Overall, Kawanaka hit .244/.290/.336 with 143 hits and 10 homers in 9 seasons in NPB. He played every position expect pitcher and catcher.
