Biographical Information[edit]
Mitsugu Saito was drafted by the Daiei Hawks in the 2nd round of the 1994 NPB draft, and he was 2-6 with a 4.91 ERA in 1995. His ERA rose to 5.93 in 13 appearances in 1996, and he set the Western League record with 23 saves in a season. He recorded a 3.86 ERA in 32 relief outings in 1997, but his ERA was 5.52 in 8 games in 1998. Saito allowed 12 runs in 6 innings in 1999, and he was released in 2000 although he led the minors in wins and ERA. The Nippon Ham Fighters signed him, but he went 0-2 with a 5.94 ERA in 2001 and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Saito was 3-11 with a 5.44 ERA, struck out 93 and pitched 167 innings in 6 seasons in NPB.
