Metropolitans of New York
(Redirected from Metropolitan of New York)
The Metropolitans of New York were an amateur club that began play as early as 1857. Their first documented game took place on March 4th of that year. They played into the 1860s but when they joined the National Association of Base Ball Players and when exactly they folded remains unknown. They played their home games at the Metropolitan Grounds at Hamilton Square. The later New York Metropolitans, who played as a major league team in the 1880s were named in honor of these Metropolitans, and the current-day New York Mets were named in honor of those Metropolitans.
