Biographical Information

Outfielder Matthew Lugo made his major league debut with the Los Angeles Angels on his 24th birthday, May 9, 2025. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 2019 amateur draft, out of Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in his native Puerto Rico; he is actually a nephew of the academy's namesake, Carlos Beltran.

He played in the Red Sox system until 2024, when he was traded to the Angels with Niko Kavadas, Yeferson Vargas and Ryan Zeferjahn in return for P Luis Garcia. He was not in the starting line-up in his debut against the Baltimore Orioles, coming in as a pinch-runner for Jorge Soler in the 8th inning, and then staying in the game in centerfield.
