Biographical Information[edit]

Matthew Thomson pitched in the Oakland Athletics system from 2010 to 2012, peaking at High A.

He was drafted three times. Initially, he was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 22nd round of the 2007 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He was next taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 12th round of the 2009 amateur draft, a few picks after pitcher Chris Heston, but again did not sign. He finally inked a contract after being taken by the A's in the 12th round of the 2010 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of pitcher Kyle Waldrop and in the same round as future Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray. He was signed by scout Eric Martins.

In his first pro season, he went 4-2 with a 1.94 ERA in 13 games (10 starts) between the Vancouver Canadians and Stockton Ports; in 51 innings, he had 71 strikeouts. He made just 3 appearances between 2011 and 2012 to finish his career. Overall, he went 4-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 games (11 starts); in 56 innings, he allowed 45 hits and 14 walk (1.054 WHIP), while striking out 76 batters.

In 2008, he played for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League, going 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 12 games (6 starts).
