Biographical Information[edit]
Masaru Sugimoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.
Sugimoto signed with the Shochiku Robins in 1952, and he went 4-12 with a 5.74 ERA in his first season. He set the Central League record for 6 balks in a season (broken by Chris Brock in 2003), and he was turned into an outfielder. Sugimoto was 3-for-18 in 1953, and he played 119 games with a .236/.299/.331 batting line in 1954. He hit .245/.276/.323 in 1955, but he slumped to .130/.202/.156 in 1956. Sugimoto struggled again in 1957 as he batted .182/.231/.318 in 58 games, and he announced his retirement after having a 6-for-36 record in 1958.
Overall, Sugimoto hit .215/.267/.303 with 233 hits and 11 homers in 7 seasons in NPB.
