Biographical Information

Masanobu Suginaga was drafted by the Taiyo Whales in the first round of the 1979 NPB draft after they lost the lottery for the rights to Isamu Kida. He suffered from elbow injuries, so only pitched 3 games for the big club (allowing one run in two innings) before he announced his retirement in 1985. He then became an umpire in the Central League in 1987. He worked the 1997 NPB All-Star Games, 2002 NPB All-Star Games, 2004 Japan Series, 2007 NPB All-Star Games, 2007 Japan Series, 2010 Japan Series, 2013 NPB All-Star Games and 2013 Japan Series. He worked 2,598 games in his career before he retired as an umpire in 2021, and he was 42th in games worked (between Hidenosuke Shima and Kenjiro Mori).
