Biographical Information[edit]
Masaharu Obata played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.
Obata signed with the Nankai Hawks in 1952, and he went 1-0 with a 2.83 ERA in his first season. He allowed 4 runs in 4 innings in 1952 Nippon Series Game 2, and the Hawks were beaten by the Yomiuri Giants in 6 games. Obata then went 3-3 with a 4.26 ERA in 1953, and he pitched a shutout inning in 1953 Nippon Series Game 4. He completed 5 innings with only an unearned run allowed in Game 7, but the Giants still beat the Hawks again. Obata had a 4.50 ERA in 14 appearances in 1954, and he improved to 13-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 1955. In the 1955 Nippon Series, Obata pitched 2/3 of a shutout inning in Game 1, and he struck out 2 in 7 shutout innings to get the win over Takumi Otomo in Game 2. He succeeded Taketoshi Ogami in the 7th inning of Game 5, but he allowed 4 runs in an inning and got the loss. The Hawks lost to the Giants again in 7 games. Obata was 12-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 1956, but his ERA rose to 7.39 in 9 games in 1957. He only pitched 5 games in 1958, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Obata was 35-14 with a 3.12 ERA, struck out 171 and pitched 490 innings in 7 years in NPB.
