In 2005, Mario Encarnacion was playing for the Macoto Cobras of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. At one point he was suspended for ten games for a failed drug test, which he contested. Late in the year, team officials found him dead in his room. The cause was originally unknown, though Encarnacion had been suffering from gastroenteritis recently. Also, rumors were that a bottle of pills was found at his bedside.
He later was diagnosed of having died of sudden heart attack.
At the time of his death Encarnacion was second in the CPBL with 17 home runs. His headstone was paid for by childhood friend Miguel Tejada.
He had been in the major leagues as recently as 2001 and 2002.
