Biographical Information[edit]

Mael Zan has played for the French national team.

Zan debuted in French Division I in 2015, going 0 for 6 for the Barracudas de Montpellier and making one error in five chances. [1] In the 2016 CEB Cup, he was 1 for 6 with a run and a RBI but had two errors in four chances. [2] In the Division I that year, he was 4 for 12 with two walks and 3 runs while handling 3 putouts. [3] He won a starting job in 2017 and batted .274/.347/.333, fielding .920. [4] He made the MLB World Select team for that year's Arizona Fall Classic. [5]

In 2018, he hit .390/.438/.746 with 17 RBI in 14 games, fielding .947. Despite not playing enough to make the league leaderboards for rate stats, he tied for the league lead with 3 triples, tied for 3rd with 3 homers (behind Bastien Dagneau and Ariel Soriano) and tied José Paula for 6th with 44 total bases. [6] He enrolled in Clarendon College in the US and produced at a .277/.433/.431 clip for them with 38 runs and 34 RBI in 47 games. [7]

He was at first base for France in the 2019 European Championship U23 and was 2 for 13 with two doubles and two walks, while playing error-free ball. [8] He only hit .200/.322/.280 for the '19 Barracudas, though he fielded .989. [9] Despite his woes at the plate that summer, he made France's team for the 2019 European Championship. He entered the opener late, pinch-hitting for Daniel Patrice and went down swinging against Alex Bassani. His first hit for France came off Ryan Rupp and he homered off Artuur Driessens. He wound up being France's most-used first baseman and hit .190/.320/.333, the lowest average of France's starters but a better OPS than Felix Brown, Paula and Jacques Boucheron. [10]
