Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jonny DeLuca reached the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2023 season, hitting .262 in 24 games for an OPS+ of 99. The Dodgers had selected him in the 25th round of the 2019 amateur draft, so he was no hotshot prospect by then, but he had put up some good numbers in the minor leagues, including hitting 22 homers in Class A in 2021, another 25 between High-A and AA in 2022, and batting .306 in 41 games for the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers in 2023.
He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays alongside pitcher Ryan Pepiot in return for P Tyler Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot on December 16, 2023, in a typical veterans for prospects deal. He was given a chance to play regularly for the Rays in 2024 and got into 107 games. He did not hit great, ending up at .217 with 6 homers and 31 RBIs, for an OPS+ of just 75. However, Tampa Bay liked his upside and ability to play center field and he was scheduled to be the starter there in 2025. However, the season did not go well at all, as he was felled by a shoulder injury in early April, keeping him out of action until the end of July. He played another 11 games before his season ended, this time with a leg injury. In all, he appeared in just 20 games, but in contrast to the previous season, he hit very well when he was able to take the field, with an average of .333 and and OPS+ of 126.
