Jesen Merle pitched five seasons in independent ball, from 2003 to 2007. Perhaps his best campaign was with the Rockford Riverhawks in 2004, when he went 3-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 42 relief appearances. On July 12, 2006, facing the Sioux Falls Canaries, he pitched against 83-year-old Jim Eriotes, who was, at the time, the oldest player to ever make a professional plate appearance.
Merle was 14-21 with a 6.21 ERA in 143 games (25 starts). In 250 2/3 innings, he allowed 351 hits and 79 walks (1.715 WHIP), while striking out 168 batters.
He was the first known pro player named Jesen; the next was when Jesen Therrien came along in 2012.
