Biographical Information[edit]

Howie Shapiro was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 1978 Amateur Draft, but he refused to sign. He represented the USA in the 1978 Amateur World Series, hitting .333/.487/.500 with 9 walks, 7 runs and 7 RBI in 10 games for the Silver Medalists, fielding .936 as their starter at 2B. He joined Tim Wallach and Paul Zuvela among the regular infielders. He tied Mitsugu Kobayashi for second in walks, one behind Dale Tilleman. [1] The Chicago Cubs picked him in the 37th round of the 1979 Amateur Draft, and he hit .250/.364/.329 in 49 games while fielding .995 at second base for the Geneva Cubs in 1979. That was his only season as a professional player.
