Biographical Information[edit]

Hisao Sugita played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Sugita went 21-16 with a 2.08 ERA and a MVP in his college career, and he was drafted by the Toei Flyers in the first round of the 1970 NPB draft. He only pitched 5 games combined in his first two seasons for the big club, then he had a 7.50 ERA in 18 appearances in 1973. Sugita was sent back to the minors, and he got 7 appearances in the next two seasons. He was 5-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 1976, then he went 3-5 with a 3.82 ERA in 1977. He was then traded with Yoshihito Oda to the Nankai Hawks for Junichi Kashiwabara, and he was 3-9 with a 3.88 ERA in 1978. He slumped to 7-14 with a 5.63 ERA in 1979, and he ranked 3rd in losses in the Pacific League (tied with Masumitsu Moriguchi and Kenji Furusawa). Sugita had a 8.50 ERA in 6 games in 1980 before the Hawks traded him to the Hiroshima Carp for Yoshiaki Oka, and he pitched 4 games with a 1.29 ERA for the Carp. He announced his retirement in 1981.

Overall, Sugita was 19-39 with a 4.88 ERA, struck out 171 and pitched 502 1/3 innings in 10 seasons in NPB.
