Biographical Information[edit]

Hiroyuki Michihara played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.

Michihara won three Best Nine awards in the Tohto University Base Ball League, and he was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the first round of the 1971 NPB draft. He went 6-for-32 in 1972, then he had a 3-for-15 record in 1973. Since the Carp already had Shiro Mizunuma and Masaji Nishizawa, Michihara didn't get many chances in his first three seasons and he went 2-for-21 in 1974. He shared the starting catcher spot with Mizunuma in 1975, and he recorded a .201/.237/.255 batting line in 1975. He was 3-for-9 in the 1975 Nippon Series, but the Hankyu Braves beat the Carp in 6 games.

The Yamaguchi native only hit .174/.220/.244 in 1976, then he hit .257/.288/.286 in 45 games in 1977. He went 2-for-17 in 1978, and he had a .195/.267/.256 batting line in 1979. Michihara played 61 games in 1980 with a .158/.220/.188 batting line, and he improved to .286/.327/.327 in 1981. He hit .210/.272/.238 in 64 appearances in 1982, and he had a .221/.264/.265 batting line in 68 at-bats in 1983. Michihara only got 3 at-bats because Mitsuo Tatsukawa shined in 1984, then he announced his retirement. He was the battery coach for the Carp and their minor league team from 1985 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2010.

Overall, Michihara hit .210/.258/.254 with 188 hits and 5 homers in 13 seasons in NPB.
