Gary Gillette

Gary Gillette has authored numerous books on baseball, including serving as one of the principal contributors to all six editions of Total Baseball and being the editor of the ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia. He is also considered a leading expert on the Negro Leagues, having authored books on Turkey Stearnes and the Detroit Stars.

A long-time member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he served on its Board of Directors and also led two task forces on research into the Negro Leagues. He was the editor of SABR's Emerald Guide to Baseball, that replaced the defunct Sporting News Baseball Guide for a few years in the 2000s before major and minor league statistics became readily available via the internet. He has also chaired the "Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium", leading the drive to restore Hamtramck Stadium to its former glory.

In 2025, he was named a recipient of the Chadwick Award recognizing his lifetime contribution to baseball research.
