Biographical Information[edit]

The son of Jim Davenport, Gary Davenport was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 27th round of the 1981 amateur draft and played three seasons in their organization. He went on to play professionally in Cape Town, South Africa (1984) and Nettuno, Italy (1985, 1988-1991). He was an infielder during his career and played shortstop, second base, and third base.

His professional coaching career began in 1986 when he was asked to step in as the hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants Single-A affiliate, the Fresno Giants. This happened in the middle of his professional playing career in Italy, and he went back after the season ended. Gary went into full-time coaching in 1992 with the Nettuno Baseball Club in Italy. He coached with them for two different stints from 1992-1997 and 2002-2004. Sandwiched in-between that was his time coaching Italy's Olympic Team from 1998-2001.[1]

The San Francisco Giants hired Davenport on a full-time basis in 2004 and he remained in their organization through 2022. After working as a roving hitting instructor in 2004 between San Jose and Salem-Keizer, Davenport was the San Jose Giants hitting coach in 2005. That team dominated the California League, setting franchise hitting records for batting average (.295), doubles (292), and home runs (143) en route to a League championship. Davenport moved up to the AA Connecticut Defenders in 2006-2007. After the 2006 season, he served as a hitting coach for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League. Davenport returned to San Jose for the 2008-2012 seasons. In the six seasons that Davenport coached San Jose hitters, San Jose posted four out of the top five team batting averages in club history. Davenport became a manager in 2013-2014 for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. He spent the next three years as a Giants minor league instructor focusing upon infield work and hitting. From 2018-2022 Davenport was a fundamentals coach for the Richmond Flying Squirrels (2018), San Jose Giants (2019), and Flying Squirrels again (2021-2022). He was scheduled to return to San Jose in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

In 2024 the Yolo High Wheelers hired Davenport as their bench coach. He helped the High Wheelers to a Pioneer League championship in their inaugural season. Davenport returned as bench coach in 2025 for the renamed Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers.
