Biographical Information

Elliott Avent has been a longtime college coach. He began as an assistant at North Carolina Wesleyan in 1981-1982, then was Virginia Commonwealth University in 1983. In 1984-1985, he was an assistant for Louisburg Junior College. Avent was an assistant at College of William and Mary in 1986-1987.

In 1988, Avent came to North Carolina State University as an assistant. He was head coach at New Mexico State University from 1989-1996, going 225-213 to revive a program that was on the brink of elimination. He returned to North Carolina State in August 1996 as head coach.

In 2003, NC State made it to the top 10 nationally for the first time. He was named National Coach of the Year by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. He coached for Team USA in the 2004 World University Championship. Avent helped develop first-round draftees Joey Devine and Andrew Brackman while at NC State. In 2008, his staff was 8th in the nation in ERA. He won 458 games in his first 13 years as coach with the Wolfpack. After NC State was eliminated from the 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Avent announced his retirement effective after the season. [1] He finished with 1,103 career wins and trips to the 2013 College World Series, 2021 College World Series and 2024 College World Series.
