"On Wednesday last, the Metropolitan Club again attempted to take a ball from their New York brethren and failed... The Metropolitan nine was again changed - Orr, from the Alaskas, playing first base; Esterbrook third; and Cramer in the field, and all of them did effective work at their positions..." - Sporting Life, April 29, 1883, on an exhibition game between the Metropolitans and Gothams, teams from two different leagues
"Cramer, on April 19 and 20, played as the left fielder on the Metropolitan team against the New York League nine. On May 11, he played at right field for the New York nine in Detroit, although the American Association has a rule expressly forbidding this "revolving." - Sporting Life, May 20, 1883, noting that Cramer, although a Metropolitan player during the preseason, appeared for the Gothams during 1883
Dick Cramer, who was born Edward Cramer, appeared in two games in the big leagues in 1883 with the New York Gothams. This was a surprise to Sporting Life because Cramer had been with a different team shortly before. He played his two games on May 11 and May 15th, going hitless in six at bats. An outfielder, he had no putouts or assists in the field. Later that year, an outfielder named Cramer made appearances for the Newark team, which played exhibitions against the New York Metropolitans, and it may have been this Cramer.
He was long listed as having died two years later, in 1885, but that was another person named William B. Cramer. The ballplayer lived until 1898. Another person by the name of Dick Cramer founded STATS, Inc., the sports statistics company about 100 years after this Dick Cramer played for the Gothams.
