David Donaldson played regularly for the Great Britain national team. The British baseball site Project COBB called him the top Scottish-born player of his generation.

Donaldson represented Britain in the 1993 and 1994 European Junior Championships. He was 1 for 3 with a double in the 1996 B-Level European Championship as Britain won a spot in the 1997 European Championship; he was 1-for-7 with a double and a run in those Euros. His hit came off Bronze Medal winner Spain. He went 1-for-13 in the 1999 European Championship, with a hit off France. At the 2001 European Championship, he was 2 for 10 with a run and a RBI; one of his hits came off the champion Netherlands. He fielded .556, his four errors tying for 5th in the event (with Javier Zabalza, Damir Karin, Alexandre Inozemtsev and Dario Cusak). He was 4-for-4 with five RBI in one 2002 exhibition game versus Sweden. He hit .176/.263/.235 at the 2003 European Championship, with four errors in eight changes. He played for the Oskarshamn Lost Boys in Sweden in 2004. He produced at a .333/.467/.333 clip in the 2005 European Championship, tying for second on the team in walks (3) and being second in OBP. He fielded .700 at the hot corner. His six appearances in European Championships and B-Level Euros were tied for third in team annals to that point (even with Nick Carter and Frank Parker Jr., trailing only Alan Bloomfield and Brian Thurston).
